Thailand Emerges as a Top Halal-Friendly Destination for Muslim Travelers in 2024

Thailand continues to shine as a top destination for Muslim travelers, ranking fifth in the latest Mastercard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2024 report. With a solid score of 52, Thailand demonstrates its commitment to enhancing the travel experience for Muslim tourists through increased halal food options and Muslim-friendly amenities, such as prayer rooms in tourist attractions. This achievement reflects the country’s efforts to integrate a welcoming environment for Muslim visitors.

The Thai government’s strategic initiatives, including a comprehensive five-year development plan, aim to establish the nation as a “halal hub” in Southeast Asia by 2027. This plan focuses on expanding the halal industry across various sectors—food, apparel, services, and tourism—to attract a diverse range of tourists, particularly from the Middle East. With this approach, Thailand is broadening its appeal within the global Muslim tourism market and enhancing its tourism offerings.

The GMTI report highlights that the Muslim travel market is poised for significant growth, with international arrivals of Muslim travelers projected to reach up to 168 million this year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Factors driving this growth include demographic trends, economic expansion, and advancements in technology that cater to Muslim travelers’ needs. Tools such as apps for locating halal food, prayer times, and Qibla directions are enhancing the travel experience, reflecting a shift toward more personalized services.
