The Philippines boosts Muslim-friendly tourism with new Halal initiatives

As of December 2023, the Department of Tourism (DOT) in the Philippines has recognized 289 halal-friendly establishments and is broadening this initiative nationwide, extending from Mindanao. To bolster local businesses, the DOT is offering marketing opportunities through various expositions.

During a recent Congressional hearing, Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco emphasized the DOT’s dedication to developing halal tourism in the country. She announced a significant Memorandum of Agreement with Megaworld, under which the developer will convert all 13 of its properties nationwide into Muslim-friendly accommodations. The DOT is also working with other hotel operators and continues to accredit Muslim-friendly accommodations and food establishments, aiming to establish comprehensive guidelines for these services.

Key efforts include the inaugural Halal Tourism and Trade Expo, SALAAM, held in Quezon City from June 14-16, 2023. This event attracted over 10,000 visitors and showcased the Philippines’ commitment to promoting halal tourism. In November 2023, the DOT hosted “Bismillah: An Evening of Faith, Love, and the Flavors of Mindanao,” which highlighted Mindanao’s rich halal cuisine and reinforced its role in the country’s halal tourism strategy.

Additionally, the DOT is setting up a Tourist Rest Area in Sulu and Tawi-Tawi and collaborating with the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Ministry of Tourism to establish industry benchmarks and best practices. Future events include the first Philippine International Health and Wellness Congress, designed to position the country as a health and wellness destination, and the Halal Expo Philippines, aimed at exploring the potential growth of the halal industry.

The DOT is also strengthening bilateral relations with Brunei and Qatar. Recent efforts include participating in the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai and signing agreements with both countries to strategically position the Philippines as a Muslim-friendly destination.
