The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) has elected its first female leader.
Zara Mohammed, the 29-year-old from Glasgow was elected on Sunday as the MCB Secretary General by 107 votes to 60 in a virtual annual general meeting. She succeeds Harun Khan, who completed a maximum of four years as the head of MCB.
Zara Mohammed said it was an “honor” to be appointed as the first female Secretary General to lead the umbrella body for the UK Muslim population. She also noted that she hopes to inspire more women and young people to come forward and take on leadership roles.
“For me, it’s really critical to continue to engage young people and women as well as the diverse ethnic makeup of the Muslim community, and beyond the Muslim community to build interfaith partnerships, civil society organizations and alliances.”
Zara Mohammed holds a master graduate in human rights law and is a training and development consultant. She previously served as an Assistant Secretary General for the MCB.
