A nation with a long and rich history, Thailand has preserved its unique identity and traditions over the centuries, while also welcoming diverse cultures reaching its shores as the Kingdom increased its contacts with the outside world.
Thailand has emerged as a formidable player in the global halal industry.
Despite Muslims making up only eight to 12 percent of Thailand’s economy, the country is one of the largest exporters of Halal food in the world, which accounts for 20 percent of its total food exports.
Like most Muslims worldwide, the majority of Thai Muslims adhere to the concept of Halal, and as such, products sold to Thai Muslims are recommended to have been Halal certified.
According to the Halal Standard Institute of Thailand, the country’s halal industry extends beyond food to touch on cosmetics, fashion, pharmaceuticals, and even tourism, with Muslim consumers looking for travel experiences that cater to their religious and cultural requirements.
In the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2019, Thailand was ranked 2nd as the top non-OIC most popular destination. Halal tourism, especially medical tourism, is the main attraction to Muslim visitors. The Halal facilities related to medical care, wellness services, and hospitality has been improving.
