Four years ago, Anselmo “Chemo” Lopez Andrade realized his long-held dream of opening Chemo’s Butcher Shop in the heart of Milwaukee’s Muslim community. Situated within Amanah Food Mart, known for its Arabic and Turkish products, Andrade found the perfect place to offer his premium meats.
Before launching his own business, Andrade had worked in meat departments at two South Side Milwaukee stores, Atari Supermarket and Gardens of Eden, where he earned a meager wage of $5 per hour. However, fate took a surprising turn when he was asked to step in as a butcher at Gardens of Eden. It was then that Andrade discovered his passion for the craft.
Jamal Amro, who owned Gardens of Eden at the time and later became Andrade’s mentor and friend, played a pivotal role in his life. Andrade holds deep respect for Amro, describing him as an exceptional boss and a positive influence.
Raised as a Catholic, Andrade had never considered converting to Islam. However, his years of working closely with the Arab community exposed him to the teachings and principles of the religion. Inspired by Mohammad’s life story, Andrade felt a profound calling to embrace Islam, despite being unfamiliar with its practices.
Andrade embarked on a quest for knowledge, purchasing the Qur’an in Spanish on cassette tapes. His intention was to understand the prayers’ meanings before committing them to memory. As he delved deeper into his studies, his conviction in Islam’s truth and compatibility with his beliefs grew stronger.
Eight years ago, Andrade officially converted to Islam, a decision that has brought him immense inner peace. Every Friday, he joins his male community members in prayer at the nearby mosque.
Andrade’s journey towards Islam has had a profound impact on his family as well. His three children, now adults, work alongside him at Chemo’s Butcher Shop, creating a strong familial bond. Despite working long hours, Andrade manages his time effectively by prioritizing daily prayers, family moments, and nourishment.
The butcher’s passion extends beyond his shop, as he co-owns a food truck called “Chemo’s Halal Tacos” and aspires to open a halal restaurant in the future. However, for now, his focus remains on running his butcher shop, where he takes great pride in serving fresh zabiha, halal meat. Andrade personally slaughters the animals in a facility located an hour away, ensuring that the quality of their lives and the respect shown in their final moments contribute to the exceptional quality of his meat.
Andrade’s dedication to his craft and the satisfaction of his customers bring him great joy. Furthermore, he actively supports local and international food assistance programs by donating meat.
Amanah Food Mart, along with Chemo’s Butcher Shop, welcomes customers daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
