Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky Commences a New Tradition of Respect by Sharing Iftar with Muslim Soldiers

On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a significant gesture of respect to the Muslim community in his country by sharing Iftar with Ukrainian Muslim soldiers who were observing Ramadan. Iftar is the meal that marks the end of daily fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. The President said that this event would become an annual tradition in recognition of the respect that Ukraine has for the Muslim community.

During the dinner, Zelensky addressed participants, including leaders of the Mejlis, the highest executive-representative body of the Crimean Tatars, and representatives of the Muslim clergy, expressing his gratitude to the Muslim community. He went on to say that the month of Ramadan was widely respected in Ukraine, even at the front line and in combat conditions.

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has been ongoing since Moscow’s unprovoked invasion in February 2021. Since then, Ukraine has launched multiple strikes against Russian positions in Crimea, which was previously annexed by Moscow in 2014 and is currently under Kremlin control. Zelensky has repeatedly stated that he is committed to liberating Crimea, which he sees as an integral part of the Ukrainian people and society.

During the Iftar dinner, Zelensky also criticized Russia’s treatment of Muslims in Crimea, stating that “Russia’s attempt to enslave Ukraine and other people of Europe began precisely from the occupation of the Ukrainian Crimea, precisely from repressions in the Crimea against Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar freedom, against Crimean Muslims.” He concluded by stating that the liberation of Crimea was not only essential for Ukraine but for the whole world.

Zelensky’s actions demonstrate his respect for the Muslim community and his commitment to upholding the principles of religious tolerance and equality in Ukraine. It is essential that political leaders continue to foster an environment of respect and inclusivity, particularly in times of conflict and unrest, as it can help to build a more peaceful and harmonious society.
