Cultural Heritage In Fashion Curation: Contemporary Muslim Fashion

The award-winning exhibition ‘Contemporary Muslim Fashion’ highlights Muslim designers from throughout the world, including the UAE.

This one-of-a-kind expo will be presented by Dr. Reem El Mutwalli, creator of The Zay Initiative, and introduced by Emirati Designer Feryal Albastaki. Professor Reina Lewis of the London College of Fashion also served as the project’s consultant curator.

In this session, we hear from the powerful women behind this remarkable exhibition:

  • Prof. Lewis: the keynote speaker, has been featured in a variety of media outlets, including Woman’s Wear Daily, the New York Times, the Times, and The National. She has also written several Muslim fashion periodicals, including Contemporary Style Cultures, Modest Fashion, and Contemporary Muslim Fashions, to mention a few.
  • Dr Reem El Mutwalli: Founder of The Zay Initiative. Her legacy, the ‘Sultani’ book and fashion line, became one of the pillars of Emirati fashion and the foundation for her Initiative.
  • Feryal Albastaki: Another well-known fashion icon in the region, having represented the UAE in a number of shows in Lebanon, London, Belgium, and India.
  • Hafsa Lodi: An American-Muslim journalist who covers fashion and culture in the Middle East for The Independent, Refinery29, Teen Vogue, Vogue Arabia, The National, and Mojeh. Her book Modesty: A Fashion Paradox, will be released during the 2020 Emirates Literature Festival.
