The modest runway show, now in its second year, provides a rare mainstream platform for a diverse – and growing – group of designers who meet the needs of modest dressers.
Many of the designers featured at the sold-out event on November 20th launched their labels this year, with the goal of creating clothes they would wear themselves.
Some of such designers include:
Youmsara
Sarah Kabbara is a Sydney-based designer who spent 15 years planning her label before launching her first collection, which is entirely made in Australia, two weeks ago.
Murrii Quu Couture
“All the pieces that you saw out there tonight I pulled apart and sewed back together again,” she says. “I’ve found myself in love with black velvet these days.”Noting that many Indigenous designers work with prints, Creed says: “I love black. It’s also a reflection of my heritage and I think every woman can wear it.”
Yasmin Jay
Yasmin Jay is a Sydney-based designer who debuted her eponymous label in March of this year. “When I look at the inspiration … it all comes back to my Lebanese heritage,” she says.
The ‘Global Modest Fashion Week’ Association was recently formed, according to Aisha Nancy Novakovich who works at Modest Fashion Australia, with five female founders from the United States, Indonesia, Russia, France, and Morocco. In the Modest Fashion Week World Conference 2021, they will formally welcome new Global Ambassador H.E. Nur Asia Uno and Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga S. Uno.
The event is held in Jakarta on November 30th, 1 pm (Jakarta), 2 pm (Perth) time. The event will also be broadcast live on YouTube Indonesia Modest Fashion TV.
