Philippines Sets up National Halal Office to Boost Global Trade

The Philippines has taken a big step toward strengthening its position in the global halal market by establishing the National Halal Industry Development Office (NHIDO). This office, led by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), aspires to position the country as a competitive player in the $4 trillion halal industry expected by 2028. This project not only promotes the home halal ecosystem, but also increases exporting opportunities to key global markets, primarily in Southeast Asia.

NHIDO will facilitate halal policies, make international certifications easier, and ensure compliance with global standards. This would help the Philippines’ reputation as a reliable provider of halal-certified products and services. The DTI’s objective includes promoting halal-certified products around the world, building a strong halal supply chain, and delivering business training programs.

Targeting Indonesia, the world’s largest halal market, offers a significant opportunity. Indonesia’s halal market was valued at $279.26 billion in 2023 and is predicted to continue growing rapidly. With its high demand for halal products and proximity to the Philippines, Indonesia is a great trade partner for boosting exports and strengthening regional cooperation.

The formation of the NHIDO is a critical step toward the Philippines’ becoming a global halal leader. By addressing certification issues, cooperating with stakeholders, and focusing on high-growth countries like as Indonesia, the Philippines may create new economic opportunities while also strengthening its cultural inclusivity and regional cooperation.
