Brazil Invests in Halal Tourism to Attract More Muslim Travelers

Brazil is investing in halal tourism to to increase the number of tourists coming from Muslim-majority countries. 

The South American country is already the world’s largest producer and exporter of halal meat.

It is now looking to tap into the lucrative market catering for Muslim tourists. With an estimated 1.2 to 2 million Muslims, Brazil is home to the largest Muslim community in Latin America.

Speaking at the Mecca Halal Forum 2024 Mohamed El Zoghbi, president of the certification body, spoke about the role of FAMBRAS Halal within the market.

“Brazil is the world leader in Halal protein. In 2023, in poultry alone the volume was 2.384 million tons exported. This significant number is due to the pioneering spirit and effort used to this day, towards the success of the Brazilian product. FAMBRAS Halal ranks first in certifications in Brazil and Latin America and is recognized in more than 160 countries,” he declared.

He also stated that “SYS Halal, a platform to maintain, prove and expand the credibility of the Brazilian Halal product, should contribute to other topics under discussion, for example, in the unification of standards and use technology in favor of the evolution of the process, bringing savings, speed and security”.

During the Mecca Halal Forum, the certifier showed the work carried out in Brazilian lands throughout its just over 40 years, as well as its own knowledge about Halal. Nizar Ghandour, director of international relations, Omar Chahine, director of commercial intelligence, and Sheik Essadik El Otmani, director of religious affairs, were also present at the fair.
