Malaga, a bustling port city in Andalusia, has been honored with a prestigious award for its remarkable marketing campaign dedicated to promoting halal tourism. The city’s efforts to attract Muslim travelers and establish itself as a prime destination for this demographic were recognized at the renowned Halal Travel Awards, an internationally acclaimed platform for acknowledging excellence in halal tourism.
During a grand ceremony held in Singapore as part of the Global Halal Tourism Summit, Malaga’s outstanding achievements in targeting and appealing to Muslim travelers were highlighted. The city’s advertising campaign successfully positioned it as a premier European choice for Muslim tourists, leading to an increased global awareness of Malaga as a top-notch travel destination, particularly in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
Accepting the award on behalf of Malaga was Mercedes Alonso, the Spanish Ambassador in Singapore, who attended the event representing the city. The Global Halal Tourism Summit, known as the Halal in Travel Global Summit, brought together over 60 international speakers and facilitated knowledge-sharing and collaboration within the industry.
These prestigious accolades bestowed by the Halal Travel Awards recognize exemplary destinations, companies, organizations, and individuals who have significantly contributed to the growth of Muslim-friendly travel. In the case of Malaga, the award specifically highlights the effectiveness of its tourism marketing campaign titled “The Jewel of Spain.”
The Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) presentation accompanies the awards. Launched in 2015, this annual index, created in collaboration between CrescentRating and MasterCard, assesses the quality and development of Muslim-friendly travel destinations across four crucial areas: access, communications, environment, and services.
The organizers of the awards emphasized that Malaga has become a highly sought-after destination for Muslim travelers adhering to Halal practices. This accomplishment stems from the city’s dedication to offering tailored products, resources, guides, and travel services that cater to the preferences and needs of Muslim tourists.
Simultaneously, this prestigious award arrives as the Costa del Sol, the coastal region where Malaga is situated, endeavors to attract tourists with substantial purchasing power from the Middle East. To support this goal, the region has scheduled five professional conferences in the United Arab Emirates, a destination with direct flights from Malaga Airport during the upcoming summer season. These conferences will engage hundreds of travel agents who will explore the destination’s latest features, values, and the essence of a luxurious, sustainable, and high-quality experience. This premium tourism movement significantly contributes to the local economy, attracting approximately half a million tourists from diverse nationalities each year, who spend an average of over 600 euros per day.
