A group of over 100 Muslim women and youths in Cornwall celebrated International Women’s Day on March 4th at the Benson Centre. The event was organized by Afia Chaudhry and was attended by Senator Bernadette Clement, Cornwall Councilors Carilyne Hébert and Sarah Good. Participants at the event represented 15 countries and spoke 20 different languages. The gathering provided an opportunity for Muslim women to connect and network on common grounds. Inspirational speeches were given, and Muslim female contributors in the Cornwall community were appreciated and recognized. The event also showcased two young Muslim entrepreneurs, including Afia’s 12-year-old daughter, Hafsa Chaudhry, and 15-year-old Mariam’s collection of clothing and accessories. A Henna booth by high school girl Hadia Irfan was also popular at the gathering. The event concluded with an international buffet being served. Senator Clement referenced the event in a social media post, acknowledging the celebration and education of Muslim women’s contributions to history and the community. International Women’s Day is observed worldwide to celebrate and promote the achievements of women, with various ways of commemorating the day.
