The Saudi film “Champions,” a remake of the Spanish blockbuster Campeones, will be released in GCC theaters on March 10.
The original film was ranked the best movie at the Spanish Film Academy’s Goya Awards in 2018.
This film was adapted for the Arab market by Saudi scriptwriters Maram Taibah and Wael Al Saeed, and it is directed by Manuel Calvo, who contributed on the Oscar-nominated movie Pain and Glory. Andres Vicente Gomez, an Oscar-winning producer, is in charge of the production.
The film follows Khaled, the assistant coach of a renowned Saudi football club, who ends himself in disciplinary court after losing his temper. He is obliged to perform an unexpected community duty after losing his fancy job: coaching a non-professional squad of players with intellectual disability.
The creators want to raise awareness of determined people in the kingdom in the same manner that the Spanish film did.
Champions will be distributed by Vox Cinemas, the same company that previously distributed Al Kameen (The Ambush), the highest-grossing Arabic-language film in the UAE.
