Pakistan: The halal market has the potential to generate a trillion dollars in revenue

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Science and Technology Shibli Faraz on Friday said the government had approved Pakistan Halal Authority business rules and Pakistan Halal Certification.

Senator Shibli Faraz, Minister for Science and Technology, said during an interactive session with stakeholders to develop an understanding of halal regulations and the role of halal certification bodies in making Pakistan Halal Products globally acceptable, “It is a milestone achieved by the Pakistan Halal Authority.”

He said at the conference that the halal market was rapidly expanding, with the potential to generate revenue worth a trillion dollars on a global scale.

Policymakers and the private sector are both paying attention to the halal sector right now. Surprisingly, the majority of the leading countries in the emerging Halal trade, such as Brazil, Australia, Thailand, China, Korea, South Africa, and the United States, are non-Muslim, he said.

In addition to PHA financial rules, the Pakistan Halal Authority has finalized business rules and certification marks regulations that will allow the Pakistan Halal Authority to regulate Halal Products and Services in accordance with international practices by implementing a single Pakistan halal logo as a mark of Halal Assurance.

Within the next six months, he said, PHA would be transformed into a self-sustaining and self-financed organization in accordance with government policy.

“The main hurdles in recruitment of technical and non-technical manpower have been removed after approval of PHA recruitment regulations by the federal cabinet,” he said adding that the Halal Certification Marks Regulation would ensure the products and services complying with Halal requirements.

According to him, the Single Pakistan Halal Logo on products would be a sign of verification that the product met Halal standards and regulations.

The Halal Certification Marks were an important step toward making business easier and providing a single point of contact. It would also allow local and international Halal Certification Bodies to be registered and recognized (HCBs).

“This will guarantee the consumers that products/processes fulfill the requirements of Halal certification.

“As per proposed MoU Halal Certification Bodies, accredited by the internationally recognised accreditation body will be accepted by counterpart organisation of the proposed countries on a similar way,” the minister said.

“PHA will accept the certificates of proposed counterpart organization of the countries, accredited by the internationally recognized accreditation body, instead of individual registration /affiliation of Halal Certification Bodies,” Shibli Faraz informed participants.
