Nemah Hasan, also known as Nemahsis, is best known for her famous TikTok account, where she posts videos about fashion, beauty, and, of course, singing. Now, the singer-songwriter from Toronto is releasing her smooth debut single “what if I took it off for you?” on which she isn’t afraid to let loose.
This is the first-ever song written by Nemahsis, so it’s only appropriate that it’s her first single. It’s about her experience being taken advantage of by a multibillion-dollar corporation that refused to pay her for a campaign because “it’s a good look for your community,” she reprimands, “I’m not going to be anybody’s token Hijabi girl.” The soulful, impassioned ballad examines the fallout after the brand neglected her and used the images, analyzing Nemahsis’ emotions and identity.
“I felt like such an idiot. I was supposed to be strong and independent,” she says about the incident. “I was too proud to admit what had happened. But I will not be anybody’s victim.” She masterfully utilizes her lyrics to express her dissatisfaction with being used, “What if i took it off for you/ would you love me the way they never do.” Over expansive, unearthly melodies, she admits to feeling exploited, singing that she’s a fool.
“This song is for everyone that doesn’t fit the mold and has felt the need to compromise their individuality in order to be accepted—my wish is to echo your voices,” she says.
Although this is the first time we’ve heard of Nemahsis, it’s a spectacular debut. It was also written in collaboration with none other than Mustafa.
