As per a report from the Prime Minister’s Office, Malaysia’s halal market is likely to contribute 8.1% to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2025, with export earnings projected to be 56 billion RM (14 billion USD).
Prime Minister Ismail Yaakob told the National Halal Conference held virtually on November 23 that the possibilities for halal product export were vast and that it would contribute 9.7 billion RM to the GDP in 2020 on its own.
He urged relevant agencies to improve the international marketability of local halal products.
The Malaysian government intends to implement three new mechanisms to maintain the authenticity of the country’s halal meat import management system.
The mechanisms include requiring animal-based products to have Malaysian halal certification before being preserved in warehouses. Imported animal-based products must also use transportation channels that have received halal certification. There will also be a mandatory protocol for repackaging processes, in which the companies involved must acquire halal certification through the food-product scheme.
The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and a number of other related organizations will be the ones to incorporate the mechanisms.
According to the Prime Minister, the halal industry is expected to enhance Malaysia’s economy because the global Muslim population will grow from 1.8 billion today to 2.2 billion by 2030.
