With a $300 loan and his wife’s secret recipe, Nathan Handwerker opened his nickel hot dog stand on Coney Island in 1916. He had no idea how famous those hot dogs would become at the time. Legend has it that four immigrants held a hot dog eating contest at Nathan’s Famous Coney Island stand in 1916 to settle a dispute over who was the most patriotic.
