The federal cabinet has finally adopted functioning guidelines for Pakistan Halal Authority (PHA) after a nearly five-year wait.
The PHA was founded in 2016 by an Act of Parliament under the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST). The authority’s mission is to promote trade and commerce in ‘Halal’ foods by marking the halal status of edible and non-edible goods. The authority is also in charge of keeping an eye on the local market as well as imported goods.
Senator Shibli Faraz, the Minister of Science and Technology, said in a statement that the development could help Pakistan join the enormous international halal food market. “The PHA is ready to enter the global halal food market of over $750 billion,” the minister said.
According to PHA authorities, the global halal market has grown as a formidable commercial sector based on the requirements and tastes of an estimated 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide. The PHA oversees ensuring that halal products, processes, and services comply with international, regional, and national standards, laws, rules, and policies.
The PHA is already in the process of forming partnerships with Islamic countries to learn more about the field’s research and development.
According to sources within the authority, the PHA has also decided to launch an awareness campaign by developing a mechanism to improve the skills of institutions associated with the halal food industry, such as businesses and laboratories. Universities and other educational institutions will be involved in the program as well.
