Given the country’s potential market for halal products, Indonesia has set a goal of becoming a global halal industry hub by 2024.
“Indonesia has the potential to become a centre of the world’s halal industry as well as the world’s fashion Mecca. We target that this goal can be achieved by 2024”. President Joko Widodo spoke at the launch of the online Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI) Digital Edition on October 21, according to state news agency Antara.
According to the President in the State of Global Islamic Economic Report in 2021, Muslims throughout the world spend more than 2 trillion dollars on food, fashion, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, as well as recreation and tourism.
He said, “Certainly, this is an opportunity that we must take advantage of.”
Meanwhile, Indonesian Trade Minister Muhammad Lutfi announced that the country’s halal exports totaled $6 billion, placing it 21st in the world. The country’s Muslim fashion exports are valued at around 4.1 billion dollars, making it one of the top 13 in the world.
By giving a unique venue for halal products and Muslim fashion, the TEI event promotes them. A separate event, Jakarta Muslim Fashion Week, will take place at the same time. “We organize this event as an effort to make Indonesia the halal industry center and the world’s fashion Mecca,” said Lutfi.
