After her announcement to retire from her modelling career in November 2020, The US-Somali model Halima Aden has excited the fashion industry for her comeback.
In her recent Instagram post she shared a photo of herself alongside Hilfiger, writing, “Shooting a special project with one of my favorite designs @tommyhilfiger.’
Halima Aden was born in a refugee camp in Kenya, moving to St. Cloud, Minnesota at the age of seven.
She is the world’s first hijab model to be featured in Vogue Arabia and Allure Magazine wearing a hijab and was tapped by teen outfitter American Eagle to introduce their denim hijab, starring in their Summer 2017 campaign. In 2018, she starred in covers for British Vogue and Teen Vogue.
She also made her debut for the Kanye West Yeezy Season 5 show in 2017, and also starred in Hilfiger’s Fall 2020 campaign, as well as becoming the first person to wear a hijab and burkini on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
Halima Aden announced her retirement last year, stating that the pandemic had given her time to reassess her values as a Muslim woman. She also indicated there was a lack of Muslim women stylists within the industry that know the importance of a hijab.
However, the fashion industry is thrilled for her comeback and welcomed her once again with wide open arms.
There is no doubt, Halima Aden has redefined traditional standards of beauty, diversifying the modelling industry and improving visibility for the underrepresented demographic of Muslim women.
It’s only after you’ve stepped outside your comfort zone that you begin to change, grow, and transform!
