There’s something about irresistible about abandoned planes, none so much as plane wrecks. Across the world, many former planes of times now long passed lie around collecting rust, waiting to be discovered.
From the casualties of war to unexpected accidents to engine failures, we’ve compiled a list of fascinating abandoned plane sites around the globe that you can visit.
The Medellín Cartel’s Plane Crash – Norman Cay in the Bahamas
Just off Norman’s Cay, lies submerged the WWII-era military transport plane that was once flipped to fuel Pablo Escobar’s expanding cocaine trade to the USA. The site is relatively inaccessible as it is nestled far away from anything significant but visitors can reach here through charter flights. Depending on tides, visitors can easily snorkel here with little effort.
Crashed Canadian WWII Bomber – Vancouver Island, British Columbia
At the tail end of World War II, a flying boat deployed by the Royal Canadian Air Force crashed deep in the coastal rainforest. Shortly after taking off from Tofino, the Canso 11007 experienced port engine failure and the plane plummeted and crashed in the thick of the forest.
Hotel Costa Verde – Costa Rica
On a coastal rainforest bluff nestled between Manuel Antonio National Park and incredible Pacific Ocean vistas that will take your breath away, Hotel Costa Verde offers a hotel experience unlike any you have imagined. Brought back from a plane graveyard, this shiny red monster (Boeing 727) once flew from Europe to South Africa with Avianca Airlines and South Africa Air.
Downed Boeing 737 – Bali, Indonesia
The abandoned plane is located near the southern coast of the Bukit Peninsula in Bali. It’s just off the Raya Nusa Dua Selatan Highway and only five minutes from the popular and picturesque Pandawa beach. As far as plane wrecks go, this one is in relatively good condition, but people know close to nothing about it.
Soviet Antonov An-2 – West Cork, Ireland
The Antonov An-2 ranks as one of the most famous biplanes in history, with dozens of examples still flying worldwide. The 40-year-old Antonov An-2 aircraft has won prizes in fancy dress parades while its owners, who live in Australia, thought it was lying in a field awaiting renovation. Currently, it lies to rest in the seaside village of Courtmacsherry.
